Enneagram Type 4: The Individualist

Inside the Type 4 Personality

Type Fours seek to be themselves. They focus on expressing their true selves, finding meaning and inspiration, creating beauty in their environment, taking care of their emotional needs, and finding an ideal romantic partner.

“Normality is a paved road: It’s comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow on it.” –Vincent van Gogh

Core desire: Fours want to be their true, authentic selves, and to freely express the aspects of themselves that are deep and meaningful. In their quest to be who they are, they feel that they must first discover what it is about themselves that is significant.

Core fear: Fours fear that they are without identity or personal significance, and that they lack an important quality others seem to have. They spend a great deal of time introspecting because they are afraid that they’re out of touch with their true, authentic selves.

Type 4 Research Findings

In a large Blueprint study of over 1,000 respondents, Type Fours were found to make up 9-10% of the population. We found a gender difference of 6% male and 13% female.

They most frequently reported working in art, design, publishing, journalism, and music. They are one of the most aesthetically and emotionally sensitive types.

“I’ve always felt like I was too sensitive for this world. My friends and I joke that I’m an alien. But I’ll take being weird and wild and free over a boring life any day.” –Greta, 26

Many of the Type Fours we interviewed expressed having a free-spirited approach to life, preferring to follow their mood and inspiration.

“I woke up thinking I was going to get stuff done. But then I saw an American Kestral, so I took photos of him, and I was supposed to go do errands, but the sky looked gorgeous, so I pulled out my easel and lost track of time...” –Rick, 63

Many of the Type Fours we interviewed secretly feel much more than they express, which can lead to long bouts of rumination and melancholy—and incredibly inspired sensations and creative output.
