Type 5 Research Findings

In a large Blueprint study of over 1,000 respondents, Type Fives were found to make up 8-9% of the population. We found a gender difference of 13% male and 4% female.

They most frequently reported working in science, technology, and academia. They self-report as the most reclusive and intellectually curious Enneagram type.

“My husband and I took a camping trip to Iceland. We explored all the waterfalls, identified all the flora and fauna we could find, and stayed up late with our telescope catching the Northern Lights.” –Ava, 43

Many of the Type Fives we interviewed expressed valuing factual accuracy, and can feel more connected to others through discussion and debate.

“I invited a few friends over to game and ordered 6 pizzas. Then Megan made a questionable claim about Keynesian economics; I pulled up the data and we debated til 4am.” –James, 28

Many of the Type Fives we interviewed are secretly very humble and accepting of others, understanding how it feels to be an outsider and giving people a graceful benefit of the doubt.

Type 5 Wings: 5w4 or 5w6

5w4: The Iconoclast is inventive, cerebral, humble, intellectually-intuitive, abstract, and eccentric. They are contemplative and open-minded explorers whose deep, unconventional thinking and capacity for solitude lends itself to unique visions. Iconoclasts often withdraw into their minds to analyze their mental models, giving them a quiet, whimsical quality.

5w6: The Problem Solver is investigative, knowledgeable, meticulous, logical, skeptical, and collecting. They are multi-skilled practical thinkers whose curiosity and detail-orientation often make them experts in applied and functional knowledge realms. They have a classically intellectual air, often drawn to science, technology, and the mechanics of how things work.

Type 5 in Relationships

In a large study of over 1,000 romantic partnerships, we found that Type Fives tend to marry 1s, 2s, and 4s at a higher rate than other types.

They showed a preference for partners who are kind, conscientious, and sensitive to nuance.

In dating we discovered that a Five can be an exceptional match if you're drawn to someone with a cerebral intensity who is always reaching for new insights.

If you want a partner who’s thoughtful, perceptive, and independent—who brings fresh ideas and unique ways of seeing the world—you’ll appreciate a Five. They may sometimes get anxiously wound-up or retreat into their inner world, which can feel distant if you’re seeking regular connection. If you value a sturdy competence and someone who will expand your perspective, a Five could be your perfect match.

Fives descend into low health when they’re afraid of being incapable. They adopt a cynical attitude and isolate themselves from the world, leading to paranoid thoughts and distorted perceptions.
